PLEDGE NOT TO PATRONIZE UNWANTED DEVELOPMENT ON BAINBRIDGE ISLAND I, [Your name will be inserted here] either reside, frequently visit or am regularly employed in the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington. For the reasons outlined below, I strongly oppose development of the “Walgreens/KeyBank/Visconsi Shopping Center” at and near the intersection of High School Road and State Highway 305 in this City. Therefore, I publicly pledge to not patronize any business or commercial establishment that occupies space within the KeyBank/Visconsi development, or which contributes to its construction, at least through and including the year 2021. REASONS I oppose development of the KeyBank/Visconsi Shopping Center for a number of reasons, but primarily because it will have significantly negative impacts on local traffic, public safety, wildlife and air quality. It will require the destruction of a natural woodland area that is home to many species of birds and wildlife, further depleting their habitat and bringing them into conflict with humans. In addition, this development violates several express goals and policies of the Bainbridge Island Comprehensive Plan, and is simply unwanted by Island residents. With only a few exceptions, public comment on the proposed development was strongly opposed. The City’s Planning Commission voted unanimously to reject the project. Yet, the Hearing Examiner determined that policy statements in the Comprehensive Plan are not binding, and that the development otherwise satisfies legal requirements. As a result, the community’s preference, and the community values contained in our Comprehensive Plan, have been ignored. This is not acceptable.
