I just want to premiss that I am not a breeder. I am a Mastiff - TopicsExpress

I just want to premiss that I am not a breeder. I am a Mastiff owner and have had four Mastiffs for over 12 years. My girl on the left is 12 years old. Yes thats right, 12. She has no health issues, besides age related. Her back legs have atrophied and she has trouble getting up and down. She was fully tested, not vet checked. The big guy on the right is my 21 month old brindle boy. He too came from a very reputable breeder who believes strongly in genetic and health testing. I still speak to my brindles breeder on a daily basis. She has always been there to answer any questions as well as just keep up with Quints progress. I have also met wonderful breeders who believe the same standards of testing she does. My reason for sharing my babies is to help prospective buyers realize there is a reason why Mastiffs are expensive. You dont want to buy a puppy from a person that does t believe in testing. You will pay in the long run. Our first AKC puppy 16 years ago was not tested and had elbow crutiate surgery at 6 mos old to try to correct an abnormality only to develop hip displasia at age 2 and then put down at age 4 because surgeries were no longer an option. We bought him for $500 and spent $12k in surgeries and medication to try to help him. I believe in this breed and love the temperament they have, they are perfect additions to my family with small kids. It breaks my heart to see breedings that are happening by people who dont value preserving the breed. I am not trying to bash people at all. I just wanted to be the flip side to the equation, the owner, and show that the cost and pain of owning a poorly bred Mastiff is far more in the long run. If you cant afford the breed then maybe rescuing a dog from the pound is a far better option. I guess I will end with you get what you pay for. Good luck to you all. I am happy to share my experiences and help in any way I can, as well as recommend some amazing breeders who can help answer questions about a prospective liter you may be looking into.
