I just watched Requiem for the Big East on ESPN. The irony of a documentary chronicling the demise of the Big East conference airing on ESPN is not lost on me. And I will say I am a huge fan of the new Big East, I understand that the old Big East will never be replaced, but I like the full circle nature of an all-basketball conference being born from the ashes of made for football decisions. But I enjoyed watching real basketball being honored. Contrary to recent rule changes, basketball is a contact sport. I remember watching Big Monday games with my dad. I remember loving Pearl Washington and hating Patrick Ewing. I remember watching my dad go crazy as Villanova defeated Goliath. I remember Ronny Seikly, Sherman Douglas, Billy Owens, Alonzo Mourning, Mt. Mutombo, A.I., Donyell Marshall, Rip Hamilton, Jesus Shuttlesworth, Kerry Kittles, Troy Bell, Terry Dehere, and Jerome Lane (Send it in Jerome). I remember Scottie Reynolds, Gerry McNamara, Kemba Walker, Jeff Green, and Peyton Siva. I remember faking sick as a 10 year old to stay home and watch an afternoon session of the Big East Tourney, and I remember being sick (like deathly ill) and still going to a semifinal game in the Garden with my best buddies. For me, the Big East was college basketball. I am too young to really appreciate the Big Five, and I am too old to appreciate an Northeast Corridor conference that had teams from Kentucky, Florida, Illinois, and Indiana. Unfortunately now all any of us have left of the original Big East is the memories. So I will enjoy the memories. Thank you 30 for 30.
