I just watched a critically-acclaimed documentary called The Act of Killing, which is about the Indonesian killings of 1965-1966, in which over 500,000 people were murdered by government sponsored death squads. Those who committed these atrocities are the ones who are in power now... and shockingly are praised and glorified by many there. They sit in front of a camera, boasting and laughing about the rape, torture, murder, burning of villages, etc... And they were willing to be actors and re-enact many of these horrors. As much as they boast and try to argue and justify the things they did, they also reveal that they know that what they did was wrong. They speak of horrific nightmares that plague them nightly - of the angry ghosts of those they killed coming for them in their dreams. You can see the pained expressions in their faces, their blank stares into space as they think about the things they did... They argue with each other in front of the camera - some shamefully speaking of the horror they brought to so many, while others try to arrogantly justify it... but you can tell they dont even believe themselves. You can tell they are trying to convince THEMSELVES. But at the end of the day, they laugh and think of themselves as suave, cool gangsters... Movie stars... And at the end of this day, I say: Anwar Congo, Adi Zulkadry, and all of Pemuda Pancasila - may you all burn in hell...where, judging by the guilt and shame they show throughout yet desperately try to repress, even they know they will be going.
