I keep seeing all these posts/suggestions/invites to these club music festivals and take one look and feel like, what a joke! The line-ups are terrible, okay one headliner and a few support acts might be good but the rest of the line-up looks like a total joke, full of people who either: 1) Are not related to the event/club in any way in terms of their sound 2) Have contributed basically nothing to the music scene here or abroad 3) I have no idea who they are, I asked some friends who are clubbers and even DJs and they dont know either 4) Cant really DJ or do anything live, and even mess-up pre-recorded sets sometimes. Sad to say that I supported one of these acts since college but they were never very good, they still arent very good and they are even less popular now but their egos have gotten bigger because they got some kind of connections in the scene. The last time I went to one of their gigs I said hi and they treated me like I was some kind of random fangirl (lol do they even have fangirls?) and its just like...dayum were you guys so blazed out through university that you cant even remember it?!(facepalm) Wasnt even that long ago! alright back on topic, these things wouldnt be a big deal except that these festivals are charging such a ridiculous price, it makes me feel like theyre really looking down on the intelligence of the customers or trying to milk the loyal fans of the big overseas acts for all theyre worth and then just going cheap as hell on the support line-up in an obvious money-grab. OK, so Im not really that into techno but I know who Richie Hawtin is, and I have been seeing some things for Womb Adventure...I do go to Womb sometimes so I was a little bit curious about the event and one look at it and was like wtf...so many cheesy DJs and many of them never/almost never play at Womb as far as I know. I wont be going to Womb adventure because I definitely dont want to put a single yen towards those people. Shouldnt Womb adventure be more like a large-scale experience of Womb and not something random like this? And the whole Ultra Music Japan thing...dont even get me started on this. Its something like 9000yen for this event at ageHa, and only 2 headliners, a few good support acts and like 70% garbage. When most normal events Ive been to at ageHa cost a maximum of 4000yen but usually cheaper because there was some kind of presale or guestlist, and they had great headliners and many even had really awesome support line-ups. I know this event is probably run by an outside company but as a customer, as a listener of club music, I feel like theyre really trying to blatantly rip us off, especially the people who are loyal fans of certain artists. I wasnt that knowlegable about them at the time but a few years ago my friends insisted i come along to ageHa with them to see Above & Beyond, who are headlining the Ultra thing at ageHa. That party cost me less than 3000yen to get in and it was amazing. Not just Above & Beyond but the other floors were really fun too. And now I hear my friends talking like 9000yen is way too expensive but its Above & Beyond so I have to go and it just feels like the whole thing is really exploiting the loyalty of their fans. And yes, I know that overseas Festivals often cost this much or more, but heres the difference--they are actual festivals, all kinds of entertainment, multiple stages, many famous headliners and even a lot of good support acts, many festivals even have live acts and not just DJs, all kinds of amazing visuals--theyre REAL festivals. Ive seen info for at least 4 or 5 upcoming festivals in Tokyo and not a single one seems like an actual festival, it just seems like some rich bastard decided to play with his money or bought the licensing to a worldwide party brand so that they could slap it onto their event name and more than double the prices. Im not the most knowlegable person about club music out there. But I am a customer, and I know what decent music and high-quality acts are, and I certainly dont object to paying money to go to an event or buy music. I used to love EDM but I have seen a lot of lame DJs in Japan and in the US just really ruin the genre by making it so commercial and cheesy. So seeing these kind of low-grade acts on these festivals just really kills it for me. Even if the supporting artists arent famous its okay but please dont insult our intelligence by booking the very people who contributed to the demise of a genre of music.
