I know many kind, loving, intelligent people of (almost) every political stripe. I am constantly trying to get this. Politics is largely about choice of leaders. No one really needs a leader in their comfort zone. It is when we are in a place that, for whatever reason, frightens, upsets, disappoints, bores, or, in some other way, makes us uncomfortable that we look (or are looked to) for leadership. At an archetypical level, I think: The conservative leader wants to take us to more familiar ground The progressive leader wants to take us to higher ground The liberal leader wants to take us to more even ground The libertarian leader wants to take us to the playground
