I know that Im privileged to have lived in Spearfish, South Dakota when this building was alive and well ... once the Emerson place ... then a restaurant serving as The Homestead House. As Sophomores in 1952, my friend Eva and I were skittish about this place as we hurried past it on our way to our high school ... I guess it helped a bit to giggle about our imaginary ghosts that surely never lurked about in the gables and nooks and crannies! So, in early March this year, I was delighted to find this painting posted within the group You Know Youre from Spearfish if you ... Posted by Chrissy Richards-Williams asking, Recognize this place? and further commenting, Im Ann and Gary Richards daughter. The owner of the listed print. Its hanging up on my wall. One known for his familiarity with The Matthews Block and other special places, artist Kevin Miller commented : I sure do (recognize this place). The former Homestead House restaurant. Tragic historic preservation loss. It was moved to a ranch in Wyoming, I think. Once there, it burned. It was built in 1879 and was a Victorian gem. It was at Jackson and 7th. It was moved sometime in the early 80s and replaced with blah. Spearfish is good at replacing with blah. The historic home across the street where the bike store was built, was also torn down. Another mistake.
