I know the games. I know them all too well. People will judge your merit as a human being based on a snap decision about your appearance. But you know what? If someone can glance at you, be displeased with your appearance, and then make assumptions about you as a person based on that, theyre not really the kind of people you want to be associating with anyway. Dont get me wrong, I know sometimes you have to play by their rules. I get that, I really do. Ive played those stupid social games for years, trying to put forth the best appearance so that my shortcomings (like my weight or my gray hair or my beard) dont reflect badly on those I love. And it would be torture to try to maintain that for their sake. If there is one thing last year taught me, above all else, its that my appearance is MY appearance. And thats all it is. I do not accept judgments on my character, personality, past, or abilities based solely (or even partially) on what I look like. My gray hair isnt a sign of not taking care of myself. Its a sign of aging, just like anyone else has. My weight isnt a sign that Im lazy and stupid (I will NEVER understand how overweight = idiot in the minds of some), it is a sign that I am overweight. That is all it indicates. My facial hair isnt a sign Im a freak.... well, maybe that one is (jokingly, I assure you)! The point is (for the one or two of you still reading this) we let them decide our worth, and that needs to stop. We let them dictate to us whether or not we are approved of, whether we measure up, and then they go out in the world assuming they can decide the worth of anyone they come across, just by looking at them. Think about your sons, your daughters, your parents, your sisters and brothers. Would you want them judged in the split second it takes for someone to size them up on the road? More importantly, would you want them believing that that judgment actually holds power in their lives? I know I wouldnt. So if we wouldnt let them do that to our loved ones, who we know are so very much more than what they look like, good or bad, why do we let them do it to us?
