I know youve ALL been waiting with breathless anticipation, so here it is, my top records of 2014: Album of the year: EYEHATEGOD--S/T The kings of NOLA return with this sludgy, sweaty, slimy, feedback-drenched ode to hopelessness that somehow ends in a weird, cathartic optimism. The wait was worth it; this album is amazing. Essential track: Worthless Rescue And the rest, in no particular order... Tombs--Savage Gold Not quite death metal, not quite black metal, not quite hipster metal...but the sum of this albums parts is far more interesting than any of the 3. Icy and crushing. Essential track: Deathtripper MORRISSEY--World Peace Is None Of Your Business My hero the Moz at the top of his game. His trademark navel-gazing misery has slowly and steadily been replaced by an acerbic anger and world-weariness that suits him well as he approaches late middle age. Essential track: Istanbul BEHEMOTH--The Satanist I should have been listening to Behemoth for years, but never did. My curiosity for the band was piqued when I read multiple 5-star reviews of The Satanist that tossed the word masterpiece around more than a football in a Tommy Wiseau film. And the reviews were spot on: this is a metal masterpiece. Truly a must-own. Essential track: Messe Noire MOGWAI--Rave Tapes A collection of demos, B-sides and improvised jams from the Les Revenants sessions that--this being Mogwai, of course--sounds more like a fully conceived album. Mogwais throwaways would be considered the career-defining masterwork for many other bands. Essential track: I Heard About You Last Night TIM BARRY--Lost and Rootless Another set of soul-baring, simply stunning songs from our generations Woody Guthrie. Essential track: Breathe Slow, Let em Pass AT THE GATES--At War With Reality At the Gates are back and better than ever. This album PUMMELS from start to finish--pulverizing and absolutely overwhelming. Essential track: The Book of Sand (The Abomination) (this song KILLS!) NEBELUNG--Palengenesis This mostly-instrumental, all-acoustic German trio plays stark, hypnotic, gorgeous music with an almost Baroque flair. The soundtrack to a dark fairy tale. An album to play while staring out the window on rainy days, or while lost in the woods. Essential track: Aufgang CROSSES--S/T Deftones frontman Chino Morenos newest side project gets all dark electronica and kinetically moody, yet pretty fun all at once. A powerful and highly effective departure from his day job. This is a great record from a criminally-underrated musician. Essential track: Death Bell HATESTOMP--Hellbent On Raisin Hell Hands down the most fun Ive had listening to metal in a long time. Brilliant satire of that Southern meth metalhead we all know...and pretty decent tunes, too. Essential track: Stomp What You Hate
