I left the RAF 8 years ago and every April since then, HMRC and Paymaster (who pay my RAF pension) have managed to cock up my tax code/pension entitlement. Today they went 8 for 8 - well done them. Now, I know from the previous 7 years that it will now take me 6 months to convince them that they are in the wrong, 3 months for them to get their act together, issue the correct paperwork and pay me a tax rebate, leaving me 3 months with the correct pension until we go through the whole thing again. However, nothing ventured and all that so today, I rang Paymaster and spoke to Trudy. After 20 minutes on hold and a further lengthy preamble convincing Trudy that I wasnt just some random bloke ringing to complain about Jim Frances pension, we had the following conversation: Trudy: Ah yes, Mr France - you are overpaying tax by around £400 per month. Me: I know this Trudy - thats why I rang. I know this because its happened for 8 years in a row now and there must be some kind of inefficiency award for a performance such as this. Can you change this please ? Trudy: No. HMRC will have to cancel their letter to us received in Feb. Me: OK and I guess that asking them to do that is my job and not yours Trudy: Thats correct Mr France - is there anything else I can help you with today ? Me; Well Trudy, you havent really helped me with my original problem, have you ? Hang on, how do you know I am overpaying tax on my pension ? Trudy: Because we have a letter from HMRC telling us this. Me: So you have all the information you need but you still cant sort it ? Trudy: No. HMRC have to cancel their original letter - the second letter doesnt supersede the first. Me: So youre just going to carry on giving £400 per month of my money to someone who hasnt asked for it and is not entitled to receive it ? Trudy: Yes - is there anything else I can help you with today ? Unbelievable !
