I like Jian Ghomeshi and have admired his interviews and liked his show. I am sorry that the show has likely come to the end – or at least won’t be the same. But I have had to be careful that just because I like him that I don’t automatically support him and imagine that the CBC has done another idiotic thing. Jian has certainly gone on the offensive with his long Facebook entry and hiring a PR firm etc., and I hear it being said that he hasn’t been found guilty of anything and the police are not involved. If he is innocent, then he deserves to get his $50Million- but I think we should establish that women may have been abused and that the standard to bear doesn’t have to be that their cases have made it through long court cases. We seem happy to believe Jian because he is likeable and “approachable” with his post on Facebook, but somehow we expect the “victims” to be held to a higher standard- “why haven’t they gone to the police?” There is going to be a lot said about all of this, but I think we should be open minded and ready to support the difficult truths.
