I love the EDM, hip hop, and indie movements of today, and yet, my favorite song of the year is a noise rock track. It is unpleasant to the max. . . in a good way. A bass riff starts off strong, repeats and repeats until more instrumentation joins in. Michael Gira does his signature off-the-wall howls and wails. The drums have a nice groove with small deviations here and there. The real magic happens at the 4:00 mark. All sounds cease, then Gira yells I steal all the oxygeeen!!, then the ear-splitting brass comes in along with all the previous instruments. I never would have thought loud dissonance could put me in a trance, but the spell holds for over three minutes until being brought back by the crashing finale. Its harsh. Its cerebral.
