I love the game of football. I love the drama created by a highly-competitive atmosphere in what is a zero-sum game. I love the passion and toughness that fosters-- its almost magic. I love the art of it too, not only in the game play and strategy, but also in maintaining your body at an extremely high athletic level. That said, the culture is highly conformist and unintellectual, with many players never rising above the mentality of a close-minded high school jock, and so I always feel for players who are little different, like Ricky Williams or Rashard Mendenhall here. Its gotta be tough. Ive had a soft spot for Rashard ever since he made those comments in the wake of the reported bin Laden assassination, summarily that a) it is distasteful to celebrate another persons death and b) the official 9/11 story is obviously fabricated. He faced a ton of criticism for that, and lost a sponsor, and I always thought it was unfair. Whether or not you believe the official 9/11 story (personally I think it is ludicrous for many reasons), we have a right to free speech, and I detest intellectual bullying of all kinds. Rashard obviously lost some tread on his tires in recent years, and probably only had 2 or 3 more seasons left in him anyway, but I do respect his decision to follow his heart. And I wish him well. Thanks for being yourself.
