I love this Youtube clip so much, I’m re-posting it. Two thing it doesn’t address are 1) in spite of the importance of empathy, the rates of narcissism in the US have been steadily climbing and 2) art - a significant way we foster empathy in children - has been steadily cut from public schools. Art reveals complicated truths about humanity and expands our ability to relate. If our political parties, disappointing as they are, are a reflection of our intolerance of complexity and moral ambiguity, then the antidote may lie in the way we educate our children. Making them champs at math and science (while also important) doesn’t mean were equipping them to create governments that work for everyone.
