I love when old-timers walk up to our table at market and comment - TopicsExpress

I love when old-timers walk up to our table at market and comment on all of our herbal preparations... They get this sweetness in their eyes as they recall some old-timer that used to practice medicine this way. Its nice to see that here in Mississippi because life has been harsh here and that kind of eye glimmer can be hard to come by. But, thats part of my job, no only to dispense herbal preparations, but to renew hope in the power of plant medicine, ecology, forest stewardship, and preventative care. One of the recent stories I have is about an elderly eye doctor that came up to our table in Meridian. He was fascinated with our name more than anything. He wondered where we got the name Sweet Gum Springs Apothecary. I told him about the spring in Starkville ~ Hicashabaha Springs ~ and that I pieced together a translation and created the name. He then asked me if I ever heard of Gum Springs in Forest, MS. I said that I hadnt. He got that sweetness in his eyes as he began to talk about Gum Springs, the main spring in his birth community outside of Forest...and that everyone would fetch their water there. He described the spring and that it still flows today. He said that it was amazing and pure water, but that no one goes there much anymore. Sometimes the stories just take us there...where we need to be...all we need is someone to listen.
