I made a promise to myself, to lessen any residual resentment at political parties I oppose, however, there are still clear fault lines, in a way that is helpful, stark, and shocking. Listening to Radio 4s review of 2014, amongst all the cliches and usual avoidances, one remark stood out. A Labour MP from northern England, in a state of casual desperation, noting that the SNP have made one issue the definitive marker for any coalition: the renewal of Trident. And how did he see this? He saw it as a pet policy of the SNP; in other words a kind of ethical trick, an avoidance of normal Westminster rules. That is how Labour see the threat of nuclear conflagration. That is the Jim cradles submarine in his hands Murphy position. Better to maintain the sham garb of Imperium than spend the money on hospitals. If Labour wanted to make any headway in Scotland they only have to cancel Trident. And what they cant bear is that they are being faced with a profound choice, a choice that defines humanity, a choice that goes beyond back room bargains; and they know they cant and wont do the right thing. For many of us that makes things very clear. And there is one certainty, in my view, what the SNP say on Trident is not a pledge or a vow.
