I mentioned Nelson Mandela the other day to someone I use to go to school with. They responded with who ... Instead of answering them I asked Do you know who the freedom riders were ... Clearly not. I then asked about Emmett Till. They had no idea who or what I was talking about. When I explained who Nelson Mandela was or who Emmett Till was or who the Freedom Riders were their response was Im white I dont need to know what any of that is ... Probably the most ignorant, UNEDUCATED thing I have ever heard in my life. Like did you go to school? Did you successfully complete each grade? Because Im pretty sure that in 5th grade (10 years old) I was reading the Diary of Anne Frank. Its astonishing to me that there are people in this world who are so (close-minded for lack of a better word) that they dont know anything about civil rights, the Holocaust, Japanese genocide in WW2, ect. Like these are major events in history that allow you to live the bottled lives you live now. I am so thankful to have grown up with a mother who never sheltered me from anything and always told the truth when I asked a question. And although my father and I have had a rocky relationship he too always told my siblings and I the truth and encouraged us to educated ourselves if we didnt feel educated enough by our surroundings. Sorry for the rant but I feel if you cant understand your past then you definitely wont be able to handle your future. Good luck.
