I met a man in late 2003 whose name is Doug Casey. At the time , Doug Casey was predicting a huge credit crisis and a Greater Depression. I dont recall The Daily Telegraph predicting a huge credit crisis and a Greater Depression in late 2003. Doug Casey said that he only reads the newspapers these days for entertainment. In the same vein, I concluded a few years ago that The Times is no longer a journal of record. These days, it is a cartoon rag peopled by a bunch of no-nothings whose views are worth considerably less than a bucket of cold spit. This editorial from The Daily Telegraph has confirmed for me that The Telegraph ought now to be considered the same way. It reminds me a little bit of the Kevin Bacon character in National Lampoons Animal House whimpering All is well! All is well! as he is stampeded into concrete. telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/ukip/11063849/Douglas-Carswells-defection-to-Ukip-is-a-dangerous-distraction.html But it is no mystery that the Prime Minister ultimately hopes to campaign to remain inside the EU – not nearly as important a point as the fact that he has promised the country the first in/out referendum since 1975. At this point, the only question is whether the individual(s) who write the Telegraph editorials are stupid or dishonest or an odd combination of the two. People who want for Britain to leave the European Union couldnt give a damn about the referendum. The referendum is a ten hour paper scribble. They want for Britain to leave the European Union. It offers Ukip and Mr Carswell what they profess always to have wanted: an opportunity to vote to quit. But by seceding from the Tories in this dramatic fashion, Mr Carswell threatens the likelihood of that vote ever taking place. They dont want an opportunity to vote to quit. They want Britain to leave the European Union. A vote to quit that is deliberately engineered to be thwarted is not an opportunity; it is a cynical trap dreamt up by the snake-oil salesman that is David Cameron for the principal purpose of prolonging his own career rather than electing to lead with the unmitigated glory of courage and principle and vision in the service of the national interest. Accordingly, they dont want to *threaten* the likelihood of the vote taking place. They want to *guarantee* that it doesnt take place. This is wholly obvious unless you are an idiot or dishonest. Or an odd combination of the two. But thats a matter for Daily Telegraph commentary team to enquire of themselves. But how will a costly by-election in Clacton help the country move forward? The answer is stated a few lines earlier in the article. The answer is that it will help the country move forward by ruining the Conservative Party. If the Conservative Party were not an entity worth ruining then that would be a bad thing, both for the Conservative Party and for the country. But the Conservative Party is an entity worth ruining, because it is in the grip of people who place their unprincipled careerism over the national interest, when they should be placing the national interest over their unprincipled careerism. So let it be ruined. And let us rejoice at its ruination. And if it takes five years, or ten years, or fifteen years of Conservative ruination, and if it takes five years or ten years or fifteen years, and millions upon millions of lives in Britain being ruined by the abject incompetence of Ed Miliband, then let the people who would yet defend the present Conservative Party understand that it be wholly and completely on THEIR account that this happen. And let them understand that the process of ruination will end on the EXACT day that they discover within themselves the resolve not to rest until Britain be extracted from the European Union. gregghurwitz.net/the-books/the-program
