I remember fondly getting this fantastic double LP collection in the mail from Bill Griggs in late 1979 or early 1980. I had stayed home from school that day with a bad cold, so it was quite the excitement when the mail came on an otherwise dreary day. I had actually forgotten about ordering the album, plus the half dozen or so b/w glossy 8 by 10s of Buddy from the legendary Bruno sessions. As I opened the LP up the pics came tumbling out into my lap, as Bill had slit the top of the shrink wrap and stuck them down inside the album gatefold. Listening to it here something is inexplicably lost, for some strange reason. On Rave On, for example, on the original vinyl, heard on a record player, the track actually TURNS UP a notch a few seconds into the song, which really gives it a kick. Words of Love becomes louder when heard the same way as well. Still, as presented here, it is an original mono collection of all the very best tracks with phenomenal liner notes by John Beecher, plus great b/w pics. Another gem unique to this record set is the version of Wishing, which has a haunting, rippling and very melodic extra lead guitar, very nicely done. I also recall Bill Griggs and I talking about how to best go about duplicating the exact Buddy Holly sound as to instrument balance etc in my own early group. Bill smiled and said, well, wed have to sit down with LEGEND.... Great memories of the dawn of my Holly obsession, perhaps true of a great many others who discovered him through the 1978 film.
