I remember from the time I was able to hold a pencil always - TopicsExpress

I remember from the time I was able to hold a pencil always drawing pictures of my favorite heroes Batman, Superman and my Dad. In talking with some REAL Brothers about a REAL issue in our community, it got me to thinking. There was no worse feeling to me than disappointing, letting down or embarrassing my Dad. This basic fundamental is missing in most of our young males upbringings. Who are they gravitating to as role models when the Dad isnt there or isnt much of a role model to look up to? Those of you that played sports growing up how PROUD did you feel knowing your Dad was there in the stands cheering you on and if he wasnt how bad did that make you feel? Pop always says the foundation to STRONG community starts at the Breakfast table but how many of our Family units these days arent dysfunctional in this aspect? Do we really expect the school system or prominent public figures to shoulder a responsibility that ultimately falls on the parents? How involved are most parents in reinforcing what teachers try to instill in your kids daily? Have we grown more concerned with how fresh our kids our going back to school over how fresh the lessons taught the previous school year are in their minds? (I like that Arnez Clark) When do we stop living in FEAR in our own neighborhoods and take a collective stand against whats going on around us instead of trying to hide from it or ignore it like it will eventually just go away? When do we take pride back in what our City really means to us and bury this negative connotation of ChiRaq? I say ALL of that to say this... Stop waiting on everyone else, stop blaming everyone else and start doing what YOU can to make a change... It all starts at the Breakfast table... Fathers step up and be LEADERS of Men and be a factor in your childrens lives... Mothers be aware of who your kids look up to and spend time with... The task isnt impossible but if ALL parties (Parents, Schools, Neighborhoods, Community Organizations and prominent public figures) dont play their respective parts it makes it extremely difficult... Thanks Pop and a salute to other Dads just like him that their kids didnt want to let down...
