I remember very clearly exactly where I was 50 years ago today at about 2:30 EST. My class at Kate Sullivan was on the playground. Our teacher Miss Marjorie Hartsfield came walking out to the playground in her shirt waisted dress. Normally she has a handkerchief tucked into her belt, but that day she was holding the handkerchief in a wad close to her face. She called children, children, come here and she gathered all of us in her arms to tell us our president had been assassinated. We went to the classroom & the new t.v. For Spanish was on in the room. It was also my brothers 6th birthday. I remember he & I walking home on Lee Avenue & the neighbors were all outside their doors it seemed, very sad & stunned. My brother said to each one we passed, our president is dead & today is my birthday. I remember finally getting to our house & my grandmother met us at the door in tears and gathered us into her arms.
