I sat in the front row of my Nineteenth Century Philosophy class - TopicsExpress

I sat in the front row of my Nineteenth Century Philosophy class watching my professor waver in and out of coherence this morning. He is a delightfully funny, older gentleman with a soft spoken voice and an open mind, and I think his class is going to be one interestingly steady roller coaster. One of the first things that happened in class was his determined approach to demonstrate the downfall of Empiricism. To do this he asked the student directly behind me to stand up. The student seemed a little unwilling at first, though he went along with it. "Prove to me ... that there is something outside the door," my professor asked. "Do what?" the student wondered, mouth agape at the sudden transition from spoken to somatic learning. "The door ... prove that there is something outside of it." It was at that moment that the only exit to the room opened and two individuals late to class walked in. "Well," the standing student quickly replied, "People came in from out there." And the entire class immediately laughed at once. Oh, Empiricism, you ironic bastard.
