I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel last night. Absolutely adored it. It was a beautiful film full of incredible character performances. Heres my two cents - not hugely thought out so grain of salt please, but youre welcome to comment: To me, Wes Anderson films are works of art. They have a singular syntax and an affected visual style, that mirrors that of visual artists like Joseph Cornell or Peter Blake; artists who created new worlds within their constructions that exist only within. I never understand why people complain about his films, saying theyve been boring since Royal Tenenbaums or that its all so fake, expecting him to talk about this issue or that. I find these movies beautiful. Ive loved all his films (with the exception of Fantastic Mr Fox). Theres almost no other film maker whose movies fill me with such pure delight and excitement. And then once Im watching them Im emotionally a mess. Theyre inevitably about relationships between men. Yes, generally straight white men, but so what? No one else is making films where men are shown being decent and different. Im a straight white man and I can say that Hollywood does not represent me. I dont bash people up, laugh at old people, dress like everyone else or even act like anyone else. But I do see some of what I want to be as a human being in these films. I see these films as singular artworks created and envisioned by one person, but made in collaboration with people who want to go along for the ride. And they always speak something really special to me. xBrooke
