I saw something rather distressng the other day, but I didnt bother to read it. Some nonsense about Stephen Hawking warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence. Not distressing because I am the least bit inclined to believe it, but because Hawking is a really smart dude and I would not expect him to be spewing such nonsense. Listen, Ive heard the story. I Robot, right? 2001? Im sorry, Dave. Im afraid I cant do that. Fun sci-fi stuff, for sure. But seriously? Lets say I somehow manage to just totally piss off some supercomputer. What, my dear friend, is it going to do to me? Come after me with a virtual hatchet? A halographic machete? I think not. Maybe it could wreck my credit history. It all sounds pretty nonfatal to me... I guess it could screw with my prescriptions. Seriously, man, if you cant get HAL to open the pod bay doors, just pick up a wrench and fix it, you useless turd! Come on people. Im fairly certain that as long as we dont give computers/robots OPPOSING THUMBS, we will still have the upper hand! (And if we do that, well then I guess we would deserve extermination for being so foolish.) Will artificial intelligence be the end of mankind? No, Im actually much more worried that stupidity (real or artificial) will be our downfall.
