I see people posting that Robin Williams was selfish and logically, I understand the thought. But the more I think about it, the more I think he is an example of why it isnt that simple. Even before his death, Robin Williams was widely renowned as one of the kindest, most humane guys in show business. To say that he made a conscious decision may be technically true, but it ignores his nature and lifes work and impact. Is it more likely that one of the most thoughtful, giving people in Hollywood (with a ton of fame and fortune) just woke up and said forget them, Im done., or that he made an irrational, irreversible decision at his absolute worst, when he was completely overwhelmed and irrational? Is every decision viewed in the same lens or can we agree that sometimes people arent in their right mind and their actions cant be judged without at least adding context. I understand the concern for his friends and family and I hurt for them and all survivors of suicide. But I think saying he and others that have committed suicide took the easy way out is to misunderstand the debilitating nature of mental illness. This article by a survivor is one of the most poignant, heartfelt and reasonable responses I have seen in the aftermath of Williams death. Even if you disagree with the author its worth the read, both for the perspective and the advice as to how to help other survivors or people who might be contemplating suicide. If you have a friend or family member that is hurting, reach out to them. Mental illness is real. As soon as we understand that Depression is every bit as debilitating as, say, Cerebral Palsy, we will be better equipped as a society to help those in need. Just my $.02.
