I sorely miss the days of Facebooks infancy. A decade ago when, armed with a .edu curtain of privacy, my fellow undergrads and I could be vulgar, presumptuous, and downright careless with our acts of sophomoric digital expression. It was rude. It was playful. It was a much needed opportunity to express and connect on a refreshingly real level. To just be stupid and mess around. Now everything is scripted: our posts serve to project us in the most favorable light possible, our statements are poached for a meaningless slop bucket of likes, and I grimace whenever a young person drops an F-Bomb knowing full well that grandma is likely looking on with an unspoken sense of sheer terror. Sure, the cat videos are cute and I love picking up the whereabouts of family, celebrity, current events, et cetera...but its just so hard to be truly free with this forum anymore. Ive actually taken to writing regularly in a journal this past summer. Ill continue to do so. Maybe Im inadvertently practicing some sort of technological irony? I just have a lot on my mind and no forum beyond a simple bound set of blank pages with which to express it. Or maybe this is simply the world telling me to get off my lazy butt as a consumer and express myself through more creative means. #lifeisperfectonline #Orwelliannewspeakisnow #doNOTlikethispost
