I started my professional writing career as a prep-sports stringer at The Sacramento Bee. Reggie Rogers and his little sister Jackie were in high school then, and they were the among the best athletes anyone had ever seen. Everyone let Reggie get away with bad behavior because of his talent and his promise, and he was as obnoxious a teenager as you can imagine. His sense of entitlement and victimhood as a kid was 17 on a scale of 10. Am I surprised hes dead at 49? Yes, but my surprise is that he lived to be 49.
