I tell you that I ultimately defeated OCD by conditioning myself - TopicsExpress

I tell you that I ultimately defeated OCD by conditioning myself not to respond emotionally or through some action when OCD put those thoughts, sometimes very disturbing, disgusting, and despicable thoughts, in my mind. That is, I conditioned myself not to get emotionally upset, not to judge or condemn myself, or act on those compulsions to make the anxiety go away (for the moment). You tell me that it is only natural to respond emotionally, to get upset, to judge or condemn ones self for such thoughts. And I say to you that OCDs very existence depends on your emotional/physical response. OCD depends on you punishing yourself for such thoughts being in your mind. OCD will tell you that if you do not have an adverse emotional response, then you must really like having those thoughts or that the thoughts that try to define you in some way must be really true. And while, under ordinary circumstances, it might be natural to be alarmed and self-condemning at such thoughts, we know that these are not ordinary circumstances. You have OCD. And we know that OCD lies and will prey upon your vulnerabilities. So why let a liar continually cause you grief? Be indifferent to those thoughts. You are not being indifferent to something true created by you; you are being indifferent to something false created by OCD (and OCD continually wants you to have uncertainty about whether it is true or false). We know it is false and even if you have uncertainty, you can move forward despite such uncertainty. Think of it in these terms -- Would you continue to be upset to a point where it ruins your day if a known pathological liar said false things over and over about you with the intention of trying to upset you? Or would you become indifferent to the lies and start looking for ways to drum him out of your life? OCD can be defeated. Im with you. Lets go
