I think about and contemplate Death quite often (hence the capital D). I think its a healthy and important thing to do (while you can!), and perhaps even necessary for a deeper kind of inner growth. I shall never forget 5 great words spoken by my mentor and dear friend Menlo Macfarlane during one of his workshops, with a big smile on his face: Have a healthy death everyday!. He doesnt even remember saying it but I think it is one of his best teachings. But when the topic gets too heavy or just overwhelming, then I like to think of the french phrase la petite mort (the little death) which is their term for orgasm. What a wonderful reverse-euphemism! I love that someone connected the two, as I dont doubt that Death will be accompanied by a very climactic sensation. This brings to mind how I once read that Joseph Campbell wanted to be awake when he actually died, and not unconscious or asleep, so as to be fully present for the grand experience. He had said he hopes, for himself and all of us, that by that time, one is ready to shed their body and embrace the great spirit flight into the Transcendent. I also like the analogy of a leaf being blown off its tree in autumn. After all its life fixed to the tree, there finally comes the time when it takes flight before taking its new place in the ground (again). One glorious wind-blown flight. Heres to everyones future flight to come! May it be as grand and exciting as can be. You only die once! Now back to Life ; )
