I think that the only good thing to come of Robin’s death is the intense focus everyone in the media has put upon mental illness and depression. It’s a fleeting focus unfortunately but while the issue is still in the spotlight, it should be recognized and noted….maybe Robin’s passing will make that one person who is on the edge think… “If a guy like him has issues then I guess it’s ok if I do too”. Life is an equation and for every brilliant comedic rant and amazing film performance Robin gave us, there was probably a corresponding dark day in his life mirror. He didn’t hide that he had issues and that will be a lasting gift to those of us who sometimes have less than stellar days, weeks, months or years. It is ok to not always be ok. What is really depressing is that had he seen all of the love and admiration that is electronically spewing out from people in every part of the world, maybe it would have been enough for him to say “ahhh….not doing this today”. Half a lifetime ago I saw the Happy Days episode where Mork made his first appearance and I remember thinking… man this guy is really different and really funny. Thanks to the miracle of video we can see him anytime we want. It would have been great if yesterday he could have seen himself like we do.
