I thought I would share a question I received recently. See below her question and my answer, perhaps you were wondering the same and could take something valuable from it. Q: What is your opinion on Tim Noakes and Banting? Is it possible to lose weight and be healthy when eating like that? A: My professional opinion is yes - one can lose weight, but no - one cannot be healthy. The reason I say this is because you will simply be reducing your energy intake on this diet, thus making your energy intake less than your energy requirements, which is the principle of weight-loss. So, there is nothing special about this diet with regards to weight-loss. It is simply a version of this principle and thus weight-loss will result. Studies have shown that a high-fat intake, particularly saturated fat is exceptionally unhealthy as blood lipids are more than likely to rise. I do not believe that ones blood lipid profile can decrease on this diet, although Prof Tim Noakes seems to guarantee that it does. At the end of the day, I am a Registered Dietician and I believe in BALANCE! No single food needs to be excluded nor does one need to increase your intake of one single food group whilst cutting-out another. Weight-loss happens gradually over time through 1. nutrition and 2. exercise! I always ask my patients if they went to be one night and woke-up the next day 10 kg heavier. Their answer is never yes. My point is you need to give yourself the same amount of time to lose the weight you gained. Not what one wants to hear, but that is the harsh reality. There is no quick fix or single diet out there that will give you long-term results without jeopardizing your health other than a healthy, balanced, kilojoule-controlled eating plan compiled by a Registered Dietician, after all if it is about nutrition ask a Dietician!
