I took 4 busses and 5 hours today to buy and bring groceries to a sick friend (shed have done it for me, and I was glad to return the many favors shes done for me). As I was waiting for the bus home, a bunch of people at the bus stop were discussing how rude, arrogant and selfish Americans are. I thought about how to respond, since they obviously thought I was Canadian and had included me in their topic of conversation. I said I had found good people and bad people in both countries, and I thought we shouldnt paint everyone with such a broad brush. They replied that if Id ever spent time in the US, Id feel differently. The next time I think to paint anyone with a broad brush, especially in a negative way, I hope I will look back on today, and try to remember how that unearned prejudice made me feel, and let the potential goodness in each person outweigh the bad apples in any group that makes re-educating people so difficult.
