I tore down a fence today that Daddy had put up some 20+ years - TopicsExpress

I tore down a fence today that Daddy had put up some 20+ years ago. It was just a single strand hot wire and I don’t know why he chose to put it where he did, but since I started farming again 11 years ago, the fence has determined the way I used that section of ground. Could I have removed it? Yeah, but I guess I’ve always thought since Daddy put it there, it was the best place for it. It’s possible that he only meant it to be temporary due to a dry summer or due to a special need for heifers. It’s possible he always meant to remove it once the need was met, but he just never got around to removing it. For whatever reason, for 30+ years, that fence has been keeping cows on or off that acreage. I haven’t gotten all the posts pulled yet. Some have been swallowed by cedar trees or wild rose bushes. Some posts are held so tightly in the ground that I’m having to literally dig them out with my skidsteer loader. Spiritually speaking, many of us allow the religious traditions of our family to determine how we conduct our lives and worship God. We may not know or even question why the traditions are there, we just believe that our parents or grandparents would not have passed them down to us if they were not providing an essential service in our desire to please God. Eventually, we may come to understand that the traditions are just that, traditions, and that many of them are contradictory to God’s Word. When that time comes, it will be tough to remove them from our lives, especially when those traditions have been driven so deeply within our hearts that we cannot remove them with a simple tug, but we must dig a large hole around them in order to uproot them. However, if those fences of tradition are keeping us from obeying God’s will, we must remove them because teaching the traditions of men as if they are the doctrine of God condemns, rather than saves.
