I tuned into a kiddie channel the other day, just for a moment, and was instantly miffed at what I was hearing. Some lovely lady was in the middle of a school playground giving some kind of tutorial on playground safety! When sitting in a swing, make sure you hold on tight and that you sit straight up so you wont fall out she says. Then she proceeds to tell you how to sit up, with legs stretched out on the slide, how to hang on to the monkey bars and make sure you drop with your knees bent...blah, blah, blah! No wonder kids cant deal with the real world! Get the heck off the playground and let em figure things out themselves. We use to swing so high the chains holding the seat would bounce..wheee and then slow down and bail out! Wed use wax paper to make that 20 ft. metal slide slicker then snot and wed be like a torpedo flying off of it! The mary-go-round was amazing; us girls would sit on the bar, wrap our feet around the legs of the thing and get someone to spin us as fast as it would go...hands in the air...wed be flying, look ma, no hands! Today you wont see the mary-go-rounds, or long metal slides and maybe not even monkey bars...our children may get injured! Next well be fitting each child with little helmets and knee & elbow pads before going out to play...or they may not let em play at all; much safer that way! Pussification is on the move! I will step down from my soapbox now!
