I visited a friend in Abuja, Nigeria while I was working in neighbouring Niger. I learned one thing about the people of Nigeria: they are very prayerful and full of praises for what God has done for them. My friend told me that when a Nigerian begins to get money and he replaces his small low car with a high jeep, he puts a sticker on the back screen an inscription praising the Lord: Some of the inscriptions read; “God has lifted me up.” And as we drove through the streets of Abuja, I was many similar inscriptions on luxurious cars: “With God, all things are possible”. Others read: “The Lord is my Shepherd”. “What God has destined, no man can put asunder” etc etc. So when I went back home in Sierra Leone, I decided to compare the inscriptions of vehicles on mini buses (poada-podas). I collected the following inscriptions: 1) Money done, baby go 2) No money no friend 3) Blackman sorry, na laugh 5) No job, no respect 6) Dem ben mean to say 7) White teeth, black heart. In effect, I just want to illustrate our level of despair, mistrust and bad heart in our beautiful country, Sierra Leone. The former President of Sierra Leone Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah did identify “bad heart” as a key problem affecting the country at all levels. One bold step in combating the bad heart phenomenon and pull him down syndrome is to tackle the perennial problem of poverty by creating job opportunities for an equitable distribution of resources. “If the many who are poor cannot sleep because they are hungry, the few who are rich will not sleep because the poor cannot sleep.” On this note, I put my case to rest.
