I vividly remember where I was 13 years ago. I was a junior at UAB and stayed up late the night before working on a paper for a class called Investigation of Fires and Explosions, ironically enough. I had just stepped out of the shower getting ready to go to work at my dads shop when I caught the first footage of the first plane impact on The Today Show. I stood there transfixed for a few minutes until the second plane hit. Immediately, I got dressed and packed up my things and took that little 13 inch tv (rabbit ears and all) to work. We didnt get much done that day. My grandparents were in NYC on a seniors group church trip. We didnt hear from them for hours, but they got out and returned home safely a couple of days later after a direct drive back to Alabama on the tour busses. We were grateful. We mourned those who were not as fortunate. In the weeks and months that followed, our country came together in a way I havent seen before or since. United. Image what we could do if we all worked together that way to solve our problems. Bill Clinton famously said, There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed with what is right with America. How true that is. Today, let us remember those lost, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that day and in the years after. Let us also honor them by working together to make this country a better place for all Americans today and in the future. God Bless them, and God Bless the United States of America.
