I was asked today, Why should modern white people carry the weight and forced guilt of this? After all, I wasnt there and i did nothing wrong to Blacks. Its not right...... This was said in regards to a discussion about racism, reparations, affirmative action and white privilege.Well, I thought about it, and here is my answer. (It may seem a little harsh, but no malice, racial prejudice, or hatred was intended. ......just trying to allow my white friends a glimpse into the reasoning behind the feeling of minorities that there is such a thing as white privilege, and that there is even a need for them to examine it without reverting to denial and downgrading the experience and sentiment expressed by other minorities, especially Blacks.) Here goes: Imagine for a moment that America was a company that was left to you by your forefathers. In taking over the management of it you would want to see the books. You would receive reports of all its sales and profit. You would also see all of its expenditures and debts. By inheriting the ownership from your forefathers, you would also be inheriting the benefits from its profit as well as the liability of its debts. To only acknowledge and take responsibility for its benefits and profit while ignoring its debts and liability would eventually lead to a false sense of security, the frustration of those owed and eventually a calling for collection of debts owed. For centuries whites in this country have had the privilege of benefiting from the mistreatment and degradation of Native Americans, Afro-Americans as well as other immigrant minorities. They in this since have continuously chosen to take advantage of this behaviors benefits which were passed down from generation to generation while refusing to take responsibility for the debt to this society theyre ancestors have created through robbery, disenfranchisement, broken treaties, rape, violence, murder, dehumanization, hatred and plunder. One who makes use of benefit acquired by certain historical strategies is also responsible for any debts accrued by thusly stated historical strategy, even if the item/ system was inherited.
