I was asked what is the hardest part about popularizing science and critical thinking? It is without a doubt that many people, despite lacking any real training, think they are qualified to make pronunciations about every branch of science, its history, and its philosophy. This leads to people confidently making face palm statements and ridiculous caricatures. The really bad part however is that their confidence usually prevents them from learning anything meaningful. Some examples of this are when people believe statements like its only a theory, Darwin recanted evolution on his deathbed, and scientists used to think that the Earth was flat are damning refutations that end the conversation.
