I was born July 31, 1967 at 3:07 pm in Misericordia Hospital, Bronx, NY. I was baptized in St Edwards Chapel (within the hospital) on August 7, 1967. My (adoptive) parents brought me home on January 5, 1968. The adoption was finalized in May 1969. The agency that handled the adoption was The Catholic Home Bureau. The attorney for CHB was Gerard Durr.. CHB reports that my records were, in fact, destroyed in a fire in March 1997. The only non-identifying id from CHB (received 3/24/14) is as follows: BM: 18 years old, single, German descent, Caucasian, Roman Catholic, HS graduate, receptionist. BF: 21 years old, single, Irish/German descent,Caucasian, Roman Catholic, part time office job. Reason for adoption not mentioned. BM entered Rosalie Hall Maternity Home in her 8th month of pregnancy and are an adoption plan for her baby (me). I was placed in a temporary home 16 days after birth as was the practice at that time while an adoptive home was located. BM signed a surrender of her parental rights 4 moths after my birth. Somewhere around 2001, I had an attorney try to look into petitioning the court (where the adoption was finalized) into releasing my medical records or any non-identifying information. I have a degenerative and possible hereditary corneal disease that required me to have a corneal transplant in one eye. Currently, I am rejecting the transplant and they doctors recommend I have it re-done as well as have the surgery in the other eye. Anyway, we were told it would be a waste of time and money. That the only time that court unsealed a document was for a Native American who wanted to know what tribe he came from. Again, I stopped pursuing it. I have had my name on several online registries for quite a few years with no luck. It appears no one is looking for me as I am for them. The sadness of that reality had always stopped me from looking further. I dont really want to disrupt anyones life. Lately, I feel a VERY strong and inexplicable push to search with full effort. Like so many of you, not only do I want to know who I am and where I come from, but I want my 10 year old son to have access to any medical information he may need. I was recently told that my birth name should be in the birth index at the NY Public Library. i plan on looking into that within the next few weeks. i have, also, sent in my form for the NYS registry and ISRR. ALMA reports there are no matches in their database. I have put my info on more online registries and FB pages. So, thats it. Thats my story. I wish us all luck in our searches. It would be wonderful if there would just be a national law passed to unseal all records. Until then, may we all find the information, peace, and closure we are searching for. “In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage- to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness. ” ― Alex Haley
