I was just reading a picture on imgur about some foreign country where they have large buildings that are self contained commercial and residental ecosystems. Maybe a solution to packing lots of people in a city and building high rises that take a toll on roads, is planning buildings that contain all the things needed for urban dwelling - residences, stores, and production (making goods and services). Packing all these into a vertical structure with good elevators (and stairs) would mean people wouldnt have to drive as much or leave the building unless they wanted to do something less common, such as buying a rare item or going on a travel-based (instead of work-off-time-based) vacation...
