I was listening earlier to a tribute to Roald Dahl on radio 4. We think of him as a wonderful childrens author who wrote Charlie and the chocolate factory, James and the giant peach and much, much more. But did you know he was also a spitfire pilot in WW2 and an ace at that. He did most of his fighting in the skies over Greece, Italy and Malta. He also invented a shunt valve, to drain build ups of water from his sons brain, when he developed hydro encephalopathy following a car accident. It was used all over the world for many years and was only replaced by something better a few years ago. He also developed a really innovative and completely new physiotherapy regime for his wife when she, tragically suffered a series of strokes at an early age. He was a man that went through one adversity after another but never gave in to it and wrote some of the most beautiful, long lasting childrens literature to boot, what a man, what a life.
