I was looking through some old photos I had of the Tug Navajo - North American Towing Co., located at Shed 2, Lake Calumet in Chicago. I wanted to share them here. The Navajo was one of three tugs located there. The other two were the Cherokee and the Wabash. The Wabash was quite a little workhorse. Looking back at these photos, the tug sank at the dock in either late 1986 or early 1987? It sunk during the night to be discovered in the early morning. At that time I worked at the tug office/Pilot office as the Office gal, dispatch, pilot & crew driver and safetyman on the Pilot boat. These were great memories. Some of the crew at that time was Capt. Gene Cook, Capt Bill Hergenrother, Capt. Albert Molshen (sp?) and Capt Scott Cook.. Engineers, Gary Palmer, Gary Burnham and deckhands, Pat Miles and Lenny Van Austen and dispatcher John Stanger and Tony Idalski, just to name a few. There were more but cant remember their names. Also remember old man Capt. Barnaby as a frequent visitor. I cant recall exactly but the tug company name changed a few times from North American to Republic (hence different color of the sunk tug in pic) and eventually by late 1988 and/or 1989 the tugs switched management and became Tramp Towing. That was the beginning of the end for these tugs and all of us at the tug office at Shed 2. Eventually all were sold at the beginning of 1990s. Like anyone else who worked in the maritime industry, I have a million stories. I am curious if anyone knows where they may be today some 25 years later?
