I was thinking about breastfeeding, and natural weaning age. People really like to toss around their ideas about what is right, and what is wrong. What are we designed to do though? If we had no studies, no media/cultural influence, nobody shouting what they *think* from the roof tops based on what they find comfortable/uncomfortable how would nursing, and natural weaning go? The average age of an elephant is 60-80 years (Depending on if they are in the wild, or in captivity) That is pretty close to the life span of a human I would say. Now, Dogs, cats, ect nurse much shorter periods of time, but also live a much much shorter life. The Elephant nurses their young until 4-6 years of age. That means a baby elephant will nurse and when allowed to self wean stops on their own in that time frame. Anthropologist around the world also agree pretty much across the board that it is about the *natural* (not forced) weaning age of human children as well. Makes sense to me. The longer you live, the longer you need moms help boosting your immune system with on the spot made antibodies to support your immune system until it picks up and takes over on its own. The elephants know whats up.
