I watched ‘Lootera ‘the other day. I liked it, I had not seen Vikramaditya’s debut film ‘Udan’, I have a feeling it was better than his second. Now before you jump to conclusion, this is not a film review but one has to admit, it takes a lot of courage to depict 1950’s romance on screen today cause most of it was not expressed through words or action rather a lot of silence. As I left the cinema hall I realized that in those times there was a certain amount of romanticism even in sadness and grief. I always thought that this was present in the poetry, literature and art of those times, but that was so because the romance was truly present in sorrow and pain and not vice versa. These days we are too scared of sadness, we avoid it like the plague. Is that why romance is now a heart shaped pink bubble gum, artificially sweet and scented at the beginning, but the more you chew on it, it turns dirty white, insipid and the bubble you make is opaque and heavy. So I decided that if I want romance to be there in my life like the soapy transparent light bubbles that we used to blow out as kids I have to stop being scared of sadness. Yes the bubble bursts easily but romance would not be so appealing if it was not transient. What say you?
