I went on a tour of outdoor sculptures at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program a few days ago. We hiked about 2 miles in the Coast Range mountains west of Woodside, California and saw around 20 sculptures, small and large. The Djerassi program sponsors artists of many types, including visual, media, choreographers, painters, and sculptors who receive free housing and rooming at SMIP ranch, a former cattle ranch. The program was made possible by Carl Djerassi, the inventor of the birth control pill (hence the name of the ranch: SMIP = Syntex Made It Possible).
