I went through a tough time at 19. For the next several years I read about a dozen books a week to try to expand and illuminate my consciousness beyond the darkness I was feeling back then. I read literally thousands of books in about 7 years. I was exposing myself to physics, quantum physics, philosophy, religion, poli-sci, biographies of stellar leaders and performers, vocal pedagogy and physiology, acting methods, music history, books by Hesse, Ayn Rand, Dostoevsky, Hunter S., Rilke, etc - my studies went on and on and on... But nothing matched the simple wisdom of Zen Buddhism where u are taught to simply sit still and breathe and keep an awareness on your self - soon to realize all the internal mistakes youve been bringing to all your external actions and interactions. (Bad posture, angry cyclical thoughts, negative and limiting concepts, clavicular/anxious involuntary breathing, an inability to focus on one thing, habitual insecure physical ticks or emotional patterns, and a general lack of self awareness.) When u clear all this away, you are finally free and powerful enough in yourself to utilize all that other stuff you have learned. You are awake. Enlightened. U might click w Russells expression of how meditation worked and continues to work for him...
