Q: What is the main difference between Alport Syndrome and other kidney diseases? This may be a BIG question, but as an advocate only, I am just learning. A: It is the most common (usually consdered only) genetically inherited kidney disease that also affects hearing and vision. I say only with a caviot b/c there is a much more rare and much more severe inherited disease that affects the eyes, ears and kidneys known as Alstrom syndrome. You can read about their battles here: alstrom.org/ The only reason I know about Alstrom Syndrome was one fateful late night getting up for the baby at 2 am, I saw a commercial about it. Its never good to find out someone has it even harder than you, but it sure helped me focus my perspective on Alport Syndrome and be incredibly thankful for the sight and hearing we have throughout our life!
