I wrote this “rap ode” back in 2010 to honor speed skater Shani Davis, first African-American to win individual gold in a Winter Olympics (Vancouver) . (References: “Bolt” is Usain “Lightning” Bolt, fastest sprinter on the planet; the “Rastas” were the Jamaican bobsled team; Rio is the site of the 2016 Summer Olympics.) God speed in Sochi, Shani Davis! BLACK GOLD Yo, yo, bum rush the border\To the Causcasian nation that’s made to order.\The Vancouver O’, so plain vanilla-\Folks playin’ in the snow?\That ain’t no thrilla. Pourquoi, pourquoi,\Who stole the noir?\We were misled-\It’s 2010, and no Rastas on a sled. They see a brother in a Gortex hood,\And say, he can’t be any good.\But, yo and behold, that’s my boy, Shani D.\He’s off like Bolt, and before you can blink,\He’s iced them muthas in the rink. We’re bringin’ back the gold,\The black black gold.\Bringin’ back the gold,\The bl-bl-bl-bl-black black gold. O Canada, yo Canada,\Peace out and au revoir.\We’ll see ya in Rio in 2016,\At a venue representin’ a more colorful scene.
