I wrote this to our local paper just now (Errol Edmonds is a frequent correspondent who writes all sorts of Islamophobic stupidity): If there are non-Muslims out there who would like to support Muslim Australians in the current climate – one in which they are experiencing appalling attacks and many are afraid to leave their homes - please look for a Facebook page called “Non-Muslims Supporting Muslims.” Here, you’ll also find out why ISIS is not reflective of true Islam, and why it is completely inaccurate to automatically brand Muslims as terrorists who want to destroy our “way of life.” You’ll get to know some generous and beautiful people who are grateful in a way that frankly makes me well up, for any support they can get from non-Muslims. These people are our fellow Australians, they need us to take a stand with them. Errol Edmonds, you just might learn something beyond what the media wants to portray.
