IELTS 9 Band Essay Xenophobia and Racism can be resolved. Discuss this issue. -------- Racism refers to the act of considering one race superior to another. This act leads to an unjust society where the progress of the world is hampered. It has been a debatable topic for centuries. For example, in olden days, white race was considered the superior-most. However, today this social evil is being challenged strongly and with the election of Barack Obama as the first black President, it appears as if we are on the verge of its extinction. This fact should make us happy but sadly, another evil named xenophobia, which refers to the fear from foreigners -- anyone who is an outsider whether in a community or a country, is cropping up. In this piece of writing, I shall explore the reasons behind the existence of these issues and the ways to deal with them. Firstly, racism and xenophobia take birth because of the human nature of judging someone by looks and appearances. As soon as someone meets us, we make judgements regarding his clothes, physical features and even conveyance. If the person appeals from outside, only then would we try to ignite some closer bond. Secondly, as humans, we prefer familiar environment and familiar faces. Anything different or eccentric gives birth to a fear of the unknown. According to a survey done in Harvard, 79% of students could easily live in a hostel if it had a homely appearance and not the dormitory one. Thus, anything unfamiliar makes us uncomfortable. Lastly, humans are full of insecurities. A new person appears to be some intruder and we start suspecting for no reason. The ones in power try their best to keep the new ones submissive and docile, thereby imposing cruelty over them. Now the question arises, how to tackle this issue. First and foremost, schools can play a very important part. A school can teach about how every race - black or white - has given birth to great people and how people from all races have played a role in the shaping of human civilisation today. For example, Neil Armstrong was a white man; Mahatma Gandhi, an Asian and Nelson Mandela, a black. Secondly, government can encourage student-exchange programs where students from one country/race/community would shift to a different environment and for a temporary period would accept the difference. This would make the people sensitive towards the desires of each other and broaden the thinking. Government can also introduce more awards like Nobel Peace Prize that can motivate people to work towards unity and not hatred. Lastly, media can contribute greatly by publishing positive opinions and pieces of art that favour universal brotherhood and equality. Therefore, racism and xenophobia is a tough war to fight, however, together we all can make a big difference. -Rouble Tuli
